چکیده

We present an approach to reduce the convective flow in an electrostatically levitated liquid droplet to such an extent that diffusion is the dominant mechanism for mass transport, thus enabling direct measurements of atomic diffusion in reactive liquids at elevated temperatures. Convection is minimized by containerless processing, and reducing temperature variations in the sample. The diffusion tracer is deposited in situ in the electrostatic levitation device used for containerless processing. Uniform noncontact heating of the sample is achieved by laser heating with multiple beams arranged symmetrically, e.g., in a tetrahedral geometry. The expected temperature variations and the resulting convection flows are estimated for a Zr-based glass-forming alloy. The analysis suggests that diffusion experiments are possible throughout the entire undercooled liquid temperature range of this alloy and, in microgravity, up to 50 K above the liquidus temperature. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1866932g

Relation between self-diffusion and viscosity in dense liquids: new experimental results from electrostatic levitation.

By using the technique of electrostatic levitation, the Ni self-diffusion, density, and viscosity of liquid Zr(64)Ni(36) have been measured in situ with high precision and accuracy. The inverse of the viscosity, η, measured via the oscillating drop technique, and the self-diffusion coefficient D, obtained from quasielastic neutron scattering experiments, exhibit the same temperature dependence ...

Dendrite Growth Kinetics in Undercooled Melts of Intermetallic Compounds

Solidification needs an undercooling to drive the solidification front. If large undercoolings are achieved, metastable solid materials are solidified from the undercooled melt. Containerless processing provides the conditions to achieve large undercoolings since heterogeneous nucleation on container walls is completely avoided. In the present contribution both electromagnetic and electrostatic...

Getting the Hot Structures

The recent advances in levitation methods for materials processing now enable structural, thermo-physical property, and phase transition studies to be made on high temperature solids and liquids without container contamination. These studies have led to new insights into the liquid state and have revealed how local order in the liquid can dictate phase formation. In this article, levitation tec...

Non-Equilibrium Solidification of Undercooled Metallic Melts

If a liquid is undercooled below its equilibrium melting temperature an excess Gibbs free energy is created. This gives access to solidification of metastable solids under non-equilibrium conditions. In the present work, techniques of containerless processing are applied. Electromagnetic and electrostatic levitation enable to freely suspend a liquid drop of a few millimeters in diameter. Hetero...
